The European MARGISTAR project workshop, to be held at FEM on January 28-29, 2025, will bring together representatives from over 20 European countries and provide a forum to present current research and analyses carried out by the project over the years. The focus will be on the marginalization of European mountainous areas, which are often characterized by socio-economic disparities, weak territorial cohesion, and imbalanced use and conservation of ecosystem services, but are also rich in natural resources that have not been adequately considered and exploited. The aim is to identify critical issues and future research challenges, providing new and alternative tools, data, models, and successful best practices. The approaches used are multi-/inter-/transdisciplinary to support the EU's efforts for inclusive, competitive, and green economies and societies. To this end, MARGISTAR has established an online platform for society, science, and Fairway policy in Europe to stimulate dialogue between scientists, land managers, policymakers, mountain stakeholders, NGOs, SMEs, public entities, and private organizations for capacity building aimed at a socially acceptable green recovery based on climate mitigation and adaptation for the revitalization of European mountainous areas.
