On Thursday, January 22, at 8:30 a.m., the award ceremony for the 141 wines entered in the 5th Rassegna of wines made from PIWI grape varieties will take place in San Michele, at the auditorium of Fondazione Edmund Mach, and will also be live-streamed on the FEM YouTube channel.
The event is organized by Fondazione Edmund Mach (FEM) and is held under the patronage of PIWI International – Italy and the Consorzio Innovazione Vite.

Following the institutional greetings at 9:00 a.m., a technical and scientific seminar will bring together researchers and industry experts to review the latest knowledge on PIWI varieties: from decision support systems for plant protection to new evidence on resistance to emerging pathogens, as well as an in-depth focus on grape varieties of growing oenological interest such as Souvignier gris.
The award ceremony for the winning wineries is scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

The evaluation of the 141 wines in competition, coming from all over Italy and this year also from abroad, took place on November 12 and 13 and involved 30 judges, including researchers, oenologists, sommeliers, wine tasters and wine communicators.
The awarded categories include white and red wines, extended-maceration wines, sparkling wines, bottle-refermented wines, Martinotti-method sparkling wines, as well as wines with a high natural residual sugar content (over 45 g/L).
For its fifth edition, the Rassegna has introduced, in addition to the top three rankings, gold, silver and bronze medals for wines that achieved scores within specific merit ranges. The aim is to recognise and promote the efforts of producers who, whether recently or for many years, have committed to a form of viticulture with a lower environmental impact, while also enhancing their territories, particularly those most affected by climate change.

As part of the ceremony, the volume “I PIWI ad oggi. Guida ai produttori e ai vini” (“PIWI Today. A Guide to Producers and Wines”) will also be presented, a new reference tool for technicians and industry professionals.
In the afternoon, again in San Michele, the annual general meeting of PIWI International-Italy will take place. The association, based at FEM, supports initiatives aimed at promoting products identified by the PIWI International-IT trademark among professionals and potential consumers. Of particular importance is the association’s commitment to requesting that PIWI grape varieties be included in DOP production regulations, as provided for in several EU Member States.
