Hot off the press, the new report presents the scientific activities conducted by the Edmund Mach Foundation during the 2023–2024 biennium.
The document highlights the progress made by the Research and Innovation Centre in key areas such as sustainable agriculture, bioeconomy, biodiversity, ecology, food, nutrition, and computational biology. Published in both English and Italian, it offers a detailed analysis of performance indicators, including quantitative data on scientific output, which continues to improve in quality.

Over the 2023–2024 period, the Research and Innovation Centre – organized into 4 thematic areas, 20 research units, and 21 technological platforms, including three germplasm banks (housing 2,500 grapevine, 1,600 apple, and over 500 berry accessions) – produced 369 scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals with impact factors.
These figures reflect an intense research effort and strong national and international collaborations. The network of projects includes more than 120 universities and research institutes across 26 countries, resulting in 300 collaborative partnerships.

The data confirm FEM’s scientific competitiveness on both national and international levels. The Research and Innovation Centre stands as a leading authority in knowledge production, with tangible benefits for both the local and national communities. It boasts highly qualified researchers and cutting-edge technological infrastructure.

Key research topics include the monitoring of invasive alien species, biological control of pathogens, applications of gene editing technologies, and the use of machine vision in agriculture.
“In selecting the featured articles,” explains Centre Director Damiano Gianelle, “we prioritized the contributions of young researchers, whose innovative ideas and activities have played a key role in the Centre’s growth.”

Spanning over 180 pages, the report includes graphs, tables, and diagrams that make complex results accessible and provide a broad view of ongoing innovations and future prospects. In particular, it demonstrates how new technologies and sustainability strategies have already generated concrete impacts, improving resource efficiency and boosting the competitiveness of the agri-food sector.

The report reflects the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to combining scientific excellence with technological innovation, offering valuable insights for institutions, businesses, and the research community. It serves as a strategic tool to help guide development policies and enhance regional assets through sustainable and innovative practices.
