Micrometeorology

The platform is aimed at the measurement of energy and mass exchanges (C, H2O, N) between vegetation and the atmosphere in alpine ecosystems, at their eco-physiological characterization and at their modellization and upscaling by means of remote sensing data.

Eddy covariance flux towers

They are equipped for high frequency continuous measurements of turbulent fluxes between vegetation and atmosphere according to the standard eddy-covariance set-up.

Services

Micrometeorological data

Data collected at environmental monitoring sites, after quality control and processing, are made publicly available through digital archives related to national and international research projects or infrastructural networks.

Field activity support at experimental sites

Field Collaboration on scientific research activities (experimental design, data analysis and results interpretation) including instruments set-up and assistance during field campaigns carried out at the experimental sites of the Platform.

Use of scientific instrumentation

Use of portable instrumentation provided by the Platform for measurements of greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4) fluxes by chamber technique and of leaf physiology variables (CO2 assimilation, fluorescence, transpiration).

Applications

Climate-smart management of natural alpine ecosystems

The quantification of the carbon and energy budget of alpine natural ecosystems and their analysis in relation to environmental and management factors supports the decisions on human interventions aimed at minimizing the negative impacts on climate.

Monitoring the effects of climate and environmental changes

Data from the micrometeorological stations represent a long-term archive on functionality of Alpine ecosystems in relation to environmental changes of natural and anthropogenic origin: a basis to evaluate their impacts and developing forecast models.

Scientific collaboration strengthening

Creation and fostering of synergies in the field of forest ecology research by specific targeted campaigns and collaboration on specific projects entailing the use of data, instruments and infrastructures of the Platform.
