Forest Ecology

This Unit studies the interactions between forests and their biotic and abiotic environment in a context of global changes and feedbacks between vegetation, biodiversity and climate.

Mission

The interactions between vegetation and climate is investigated through physiological, genomic and genetic analysis to: assess forest resilience; estimate the biodiversity variation in relation to climate and land use change; measure mass and energy exchanges between vegetation and the atmosphere at an ecosystem scale; estimate biophysical and structural parameters of forests and grasslands integrating field and remote sensing data; develop IoT sensors for natural ecosystem monitoring.

Innovation and methods

The innovative approaches include genomics and microbiology, IoT sensors on single trees, and ecosystem-scale investigations based on the eddy covariance technique and regional spatialisation with Lidar, hyperspectral and fluorescence data (see also: Remote sensing and Micrometeorology Platforms).

Facilities

Remote Sensing

We use of remote sensing data to estimate plant traits of forest and grassland vegetation. Activities range from leaf scale to regional scale, combining ground-based measurements with aerial and satellite platform data.

Micrometeorology

The platform is aimed at the measurement of energy and mass exchanges (C, H2O, N) between vegetation and the atmosphere in alpine ecosystems, at their eco-physiological characterization and at their modellization and upscaling by means of remote sensing data.
