TITLE: Artificial Intelligence in science: from the beginnings to foundation models
SPEAKER: Pablo M. Granitto Prof. Pablo M. Granitto earned his degree in Physics in 1997 and his Ph.D. in Physics in 2003, both from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario (UNR), Rosario, Argentina. Between 2004 and 2006, he served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Istituto Agrario di San Michele all’Adige. Since 2006, he has been a full-time Researcher at CONICET (Argentina). He currently leads the Machine Learning and Applications Group at CIFASIS (CONICET UNR), where he also serves as Director. He was selected for the 'Visiting in Trentino 2024' program, which supports his collaboration with the Sensory Quality Unit at FEM. ABSTRACT: This introductory talk will explore the evolution of artificial intelligence, starting from basic concepts and early developments to the emergence of foundation models. We will discuss how these technologies build on simple yet powerful ideas and examine their growing impact on scientific research. The session aims to provide an accessible overview for those new to the field, highlighting both the journey of AI and its potential applications in science.
